I can't tell you how good this stuff is April 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Try it with any sauce over it, or even a little butter. The options are endless and each will result in a slightly different flavor. Any way you look at it, it fills you up without adding too many calories. Lately I've started making it in the rice cooker and adding all kinds of things to it - raisins, pistachio nuts, cans of beans etc. I also pour in the water from drained cans, rather than pour that down the sink, and it adds extra flavor. I'll add various herbs & spices and the result if a fantastic, well-balanced meal.
Delicious, unique, and healthy for the whole family. March 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We use this instead of rice for stir frying. My children and slightly picky husband love it, and it cooks in 25 min., so it's quicker than rice. It has lots of fiber. It comes in 3 individual "envelopes", which contain one cup each. One envelope just does serve my family - two adults, 2 kids, and 1 toddler - as a side dish w/ meat and veggies.
Versatile grains February 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This took a little getting used to. It has a lot of texture, and not a lot of taste until you start playing with it. Now we use it in soups, under stews, even in place of spaghetti, not to mention the pilaf recipe on the box. Leftovers freeze well.
Excellent, versatile way to get more grains in your diet February 12, 2008 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have come to really like this product. It is a healthy way to get more fiber (6g fiber per 1/2 c cooked) and is versatile. Like another reviewer, I have been making a pot every weekend and keeping in the frig to use however I wish. Having it precooked and on hand makes it easier to eat healthy after a long day at work, or even at breakfast or lunch. It also fills you up, so it is great for those trying to lose a few pounds.
The cooked product can be used any way that cooked rice can be used. I have used it to make lettuce wraps (very good recipe on Kashi website: Kashi Asian Lettuce Cups - I made a veg version with mushrooms instead of chicken), fried rice, substitute for rice when serving stir fries, in rice & beans, as "cereal" with milk, raisins, cinnamon & sugar, as a quick salad with garbanzo beans and vinaigrette, rice pudding, etc. In its uncooked state, it could be used in any recipes calling for uncooked brown rice, but I find it more convenient to cook up a batch and have it ready to use.
When I first tried the product, I thought it was a bit too chewy, but increasing the water to 2 1/4 c per packet and letting it sit covered after cooking softens it up. It is very convenient - it comes 3 packets to a box, with 1 packet = 1 cup. If you want to make larger batches, the packets may seem like unnecessary packaging. It is "clean" with no foreign matter and does not need rinsing.
To cook, I use my 2 quart Staub enameled cast iron pan with one packet + 2 1/4 c water + 1/4 tsp salt. Put everything in the pan, bring to a boil, cover, turn to low heat, simmer for 35 min (the Kashi directions say 25 min, but I did not think that was long enough), turn off heat and let sit for a while. It has come out perfectly, soft but still somewhat chewy. I may try soaking the grains for an hour prior to cooking, as is suggested in some brown rice recipes, for even softer grains.
I do recommend this product. I was unsure at first what I was going to do with 6 boxes, but it is tasty, healthy, convenient and versatile. I plan on repurchasing when these are gone.
Healthy, delicious, versatile! February 12, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have always been a fan of whole grains and brown rice, and this takes it a step further. I cooked this for dinner tonight and even the kids loved it. I took a can of chicken broth, then added a couple more ounces of water to the saucepan. After it came to a boil I added in the Kashi 7 Whole Grain Pilaf along with some salt-free savory seasonings and garlic powder. I let it cook covered for about 1/2 hour then removed the lid and let it cook for a few more minutes until all the liquid was absorbed. After dividing it 3 ways into bowls I topped it with seasoned pinto beans, salsa, and Sargento's shredded Wisconsin and Vermont cheddar. It was an excellent savory main dish. I imagine it could also be layered with basmati rice, corn, chicken, or even chopped greens.
Each of the 6 boxes contained 3 packets that serve approximately 3 as a main dish or 4-5 people as a side dish. There is a mediterranean recipe on the back of the box that I hope to try soon. The possibilities with this product are endless, and it's so much healthier and more versatile than the boxed side dishes in the grocery store.
If you've never had brown rice before (granted, there is more than brown rice in this) then you might be surprised by the chewy texture. You also must add seasonings (sweet or savory) to get the desired flavor since this is just the grains. I will definately be buying this again to keep our family on track with whole grains.
