Amazon Product Description The Basics: With the implementation of recent technologies such as Intel's efficient Pentium M processor, notebook computers continue to get smaller and smaller. Yet the average notebook is still too large to fit comfortably in a purse or briefcase and too heavy at six lbs or more to be easily carried about wherever you go. Enter the Toshiba Libretto. At 8.27 by 6.50 by 1.17 inches and a featherweight 2.16 lbs, the Libretto is one of the smallest, most effortlessly portable notebooks ever released and nothing short of a godsend to constantly-on-the-go professionals. Naturally, a notebook this small will have some limitations, and the Libretto is no exception. However, those limitations are not nearly as severe as you might think. This particular model, the Libretto U105, is a "real" notebook in almost every sense, featuring desirable amenities such as a large 60 GB hard drive, a panoramic widescreen display, wireless communications, and adequate 3D graphics support. As you might expect, the system isn't as powerful as a typical notebook, though it's not far off either. The only appreciable difference between this and a standard notebook is in the configuration of its optical drive; it resides in a separate, detachable module that will add an extra lb to the total weight. But if portability and space efficiency are paramount, the Libretto U105 is a top-notch solution. Processor: At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, though these machines are usually noticeably larger and more power hungry than their less powerful counterparts. The 1.2 GHz Intel Pentium M 753 CPU incorporated in the Libretto U105 features ultra low voltage technology to improve battery life, lessen noise and keep heat to a minimum. It offers enough speed for standard notebook tasks such as word processing, contact management, finances, Internet and email communications, and CD burning. What's more, it's one of the recently revamped Pentium M models with two full MB of Level 2 cache for even faster retrieval of your most accessed information. Memory: Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they also keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM). More RAM means faster computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Libretto U105 incorporates 512 MB of RAM, a surprisingly large allotment of memory for such a small computer and more than enough for efficient multitasking and generally smooth response. Moreover, the unit accepts memory upgrades to its 1024 MB (1 GB) maximum. Video: CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" built-in video memory is preferable to one with "shared" video memory wherein the graphics controller borrows a portion of the all-important main system memory. This system's graphics controller is an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 with 64 MB of shared, not dedicated, video memory. The Radeon name is highly regarded in video technology, and indeed this system and this chipset will efficiently deal with 2D graphics and do a reasonable job with simple 3D visuals such as those found in older games and entry-level 3D animation. However, it is not well-suited to the latest high-end 3D animation and graphics programs and the current breed of sophisticated computer games. Display: As you might expect, the impressively diminutive Libretto U105 is not equipped with a sizable display. Its 7.2-inch screen is simply not ideal for highly detailed, graphically intensive work, though it does sport a panoramic, widescreen format that's well suited to DVD movies. Its highest supported resolution of 1024 by 768 is adequate for most applications and typical of this price range, and its Toshiba TruBrite technology helps keep images bright and clear. Hard Disk: The Libretto U105 features a 60 GB hard disk. This may not seem large when compared with the 80 and 100 GB monsters now found in today's substantially bulkier "desktop replacement" notebooks, but it's very spacious for a highly portable ultra-light. Users should have little problem storing a full allotment of applications and data files and even a library of multimedia and music files. Optical Drive: An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning," so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a "DVD Multi Drive" that supports all of the above. It is important to note that this drive is housed in a separate detachable module that increases the system's size and weight. Audio: The Libretto U105 features an integrated 16-bit audio processor and built-in stereo speakers that, through the enclosed software, mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound. Keyboard and Controls: You'll control your notebook via an 84-key keyboard with HotKey function and a Toshiba Accupoint pointing device. Connectivity and Expansion: The Libretto U105 offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, an Intel PRO/100 VE network connection for high-speed wired network and Internet, and integrated wireless 802.11b/g LAN for cordless e-communication in today's two most popular formats, Wireless-B and the considerably faster Wireless-G. Other key amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras and an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders). A memory card reader is not included. Operating System and Software: Toshiba has fitted the system with Microsoft's sophisticated business-oriented operating system, Windows XP Professional Home Edition. Other applications include Microsoft's Works productivity suite and Microsoft's One Note note-taking utility. Dimensions and Weight: Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements." On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables," super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. At just 8.27 by 6.5 by 1.17 inches (w/o optical drive), and a scant 2.16 lbs (w/o optical drive) and 3.2 lbs (optical drive attached), the Libretto U105 is a stunning example of miniaturization. Power: The system is equipped with an 6-cell rechargeable Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that delivers an amazing five hours between charges.

Great little computer! August 14, 2007 Toshiba's always done it up right, and this is no different! Only issue I've found with it is sometimes people with not so great eyesight have got to literally use a magnifying glass on this one. Enlarging the text through other means tends to cause blurring that can give you a headache... however, for small and portable, this baby rocks.
Very Cool - Meets the Need - Too Much Software February 18, 2006 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I did all the reasarch I could and found this to be the best of the mini notebook breed for the price. Its like the designers took a thinkpad and shrunk it. Fear not the 7" screen. The software allows you to Zoom in anytime by hitting FN + Spacebar. The fingerprint recognition is cool but the software took some getting use to. I'd advise reformating the HD and reloading XP or at least systematically removing some of the junk programs it comes loaded with to speed up the startup . Upgrade to 1Gig RAM helps also. The keys do take some getting use to and theres always a foldup usb keyboard for those with big fingeres. Bluetooth allows you to use a cell phone in a pinch to connect to the net as well as for peripherals like mouse and keyboard. For the money it is the prefect solution for the traveler who wants to stay in touch. For me it was worth the bucks.. Sure as heck beats a blackberry !
Amazing machine February 3, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
It is more than I expected. The power, beauty, clear screen, and features - I have had it a week and it is has become like my good friend. Yes the keyboard is small but it is a small computer. The keyboard is fine for small jobs.
Nice machine. October 12, 2005 36 out of 36 found this review helpful
This notebook is definitely for those people, who wants an extra-mobile device with the power of the laptop. U105 fills pretty nice on one hand while being typed by other hand. The keyboard is small and somewhat awkward. For example the ` key locates directly to the left of space key where alt should be, and alt key is next to the left. However PC Magazine keyboard remap utility can fix it all. It is not that easy to type and typing speed is much slower then on the full size keyboard. Also keys don't have any space between at all, so it makes it even harder to blind-typing. However after the little practice it goes better. The laptop is pretty fast and what I like, comes from suspend and from hibernation much faster then my other Gateway laptop. There are bunch of junk software, so at the beginning add/remove applet in the control pannel is your best friend! AOL does not want to be uninstalled from add/remove programs, it just says: "No AOL installed on your computer", so, if you don't need it just delete from "program files", from start menu and from desktop. I hope, you did not believe Toshiba regarding 5 ours of the battery life. It is no more then 4 hours. I have tried to disable everything possibly: wireless, bluetooth, no usb, pcmcia and other connections, screen backlight off and minimum CPU speed, it still 4 ours. So I actually not sure, how Toshiba came up with 5 ours number! The internal speakers volume is very low, it is softer then my Nokia celphone, but again it is travel laptop. U105 is very quiet, even when fen goes up. Fen picks up once in a while and the bottem of laptop becomes pretty warm. And last thing, the users guide does not exactly matches the machine's configuration. For example the manual says that keyboard has 1 control key, there are actually 2 ctrl keys, so believe youreyes, not the manual!
small screen, big heart October 7, 2005 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
It is exactly what I wanted for traveling, It is a powerful laptop, the compromise between size and weight etc for me is well worth it.
