Slow and featureless January 3, 2009 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I own this player and the Sony S350 BD player. The Sharp player is pretty awful compared to the Sony. This player is not too bad playing DVD discs, but we use it mainly where my kids watch TV on a Sharp Aquos TV and as soon as we put Horton Hears a Who Blu-Ray disc, it takes 1-2 minutes before we ever see a main menu. This is incredibly unacceptable. Some people reported certain BD titles failed to function at all. When Sharp was called, they simply added it to their "does not function" list. We assume to corrected in a future firmware version. I'm using one from November 2008 and the player is just slower than queueing up a VHS tape. I thought the Aquos link thing would be nice too, but as far as I can tell it is worthless. What excatly does it link? I have yet to figure it out. It lacks BD Live, but who really cares. The biggest annoyance is the fact that between it and my Sharp TV I cannot stretch 4:3 discs to fill the widescreen aspect ratio. This is just simply automatic on the Sony LCD/BD player combo in our other room. This player was a discount buy for me, guess you get what you pay for. Pay the extra money and get a better brand. Sharp is junk. The only reason I gave it two instead of one star is that it actually does play movies. It just really sucks at it.
so far 5 stars January 1, 2009 Still playing various disks and was able to update the FW with the USB stick with no problem. Very fast tray action on this unit. I will update next week after a more complete workout. Update/ still playing multiple BDs to check it out. It does turn on my Aquos 52 94U as advertised.
Update/had to return the whole package because of a bad 52/94U LCD. So my long term evaluation is over. Plays DVDs nice also/only checked one.
No 7.1 optical or component output January 1, 2009 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great price, good picture. However, if you don't have a receiver with an HDMI in and out, you cannot run 7.1 audio. It has a optical digital out, but is only capable of 5.1 output.
Bottom line, to get 7.1 sound, I need a new receiver or a Blu-ray that has 7.1 optical or component digital audio out.
Sharp Aquos BDHP21U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player December 29, 2008 This was "bundled" with a Sharp 65 LCD and seems to be a great Blu-Ray player. It seems a little large for a shelf unit. It probably is an out of date unit, but it was free so I am very happy with it. There have been no problems with the player.
