wow - it cracked **** UPDATE ***** June 10, 2007 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I have always used cast iron and love Lodge because of their quality and supporting US economy. However I was shocked when I used the grill side on a electric hob when after 5 minutes I heard a loud pong sound, then another and there was a large crack that traveled to the center of the item. I was shocked. This has never happened and it was on medium heat.
So I have to assume that this is a design flaw. I will call Lodge customer support since Amazon does not take care products after 30 days.
UPDATE OK, Lodge proved me wrong. They promptly replaced the unit and even paid for the shipping. All is well again and I love lodge! If I could I would change this to be a 5 star rating.
Cracked on first use October 22, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Perhaps I'm an idiot, but being an owner of a 12 inch cast iron pan I seasoned myself, I'm a fairly familiar with cast iron cookware.
I have a gas stove at home but this time I was using a friend's electric stove. I have never had to worry about temperature changes with my pan, which I believe is made by Lodge too. I just put the pan on the gas range and turn the heat up. No problems ever.
So with this seasoned reversible griddle/grill pan I put it right on the coil of the electric stove, just as I do with my pan on the gas stove at home. Turned the stove to MedHigh. About 2 minutes in, heard 2 loud crack/DONG! sounds. Thought the thing was going to explode. It was just the iron pan receiving a 4 inch crack on one side.
There is nothing addressing this on the package so hopefully they'll let me take it back (non-Amazon store). I figured it could withstand a room-temp-to-MedHigh temperature change but i guess not.
This seems like it has the potential for a very handy pan for steaks on the stove, so maybe i'll get another one and heat it slowly from now on. Still, only 1 star for now since I was never able to use it.
