The bolts are fine, use a wrench! October 13, 2008 Everyone talks about the bar coming with the wrong bolts because if you try to assemble the bar with your fingers the nuts don't tighten all the way. There's a lining of blue plastic inside the nuts that help them stay in place when tightened with a wrench, but yes they will stop you if you try to put them on with your fingers. Admittedly, the instructions should have either made this clearer or come with a wrench tool.
Once assembled, the thing works great! Everyone else who complains about the "substandard" nature of the product seems not to understand how all of these door-frame chin-up bars work. This one is arguably as good as the P90X bar (depending on your grip style) for about 1/3rd of the cost, and it is way better than the other door-frame bars that cost $10-20 more.
As long as you own a wrench and a standard door-frame, I can see no reason to buy any other chin-up bar.
Awful product October 11, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Took way too long to assemble, screws aren't the right size. Once I finally got it together, it didn't work on my door frame. Apparently made for door that are very deep, the top part couldn't actually grip onto anything and I fell on my butt.
Really, really substandard product.
Excellent choice October 11, 2008 I just recently purchased the P90X workout program and it requires a chin up bar. The Everlast bar is perfect. It fits nicely in the doorway and is very strong.
Pretty Decent Setup October 10, 2008 Pro's - Pretty sturdy. I'm about 185 and find that this thing doesn't feel like it will snap in two. Easy to assemble.
Con's - The 'flat bar' that goes through the doorframe and provides the resistance against the opposite wall is terrible. It came with sandpaper on it to hold it to the wall! I mean say goodbye to that nice paint on the wall. I placed a 1/8" piece of same sized gum rubber over the sandpaper to go between it and the wall which does the trick. The foam padding that rests on either side of the doorframe basically starts to tear after a week. They should have used a much more solid rubber based material. Same might eventually happen to the areas your hands grip, but have only used it for 2 weeks so far.
For what it is and does, its an acceptable product for the money. It seems that it will hold up a bit better than some of it's counterparts. Have fun doing chin-ups and pull-ups! They are my favorite exercise...NOT.
Great exercise tool! October 10, 2008 Great tool: well designed, light and portable. Would recommend to any exercise aficionado not willing to spend hundreds on gym membership. Having this thing and a spring expander one can carry a gym in his business suitcase or vacation duffel-bag anywhere in the world.
