Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.

On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.

5 out of 5 stars Woof Woff - Extraordinary, Fabulous, Superb need I say more!   August 28, 2008
Loved this book! Brought back so many fond memories of my little "POLO" who was with me for 14 years - may he RIP. Today as I walk the streets in NYC I find myself talking to dog owners and recommending this book. Truly enjoyed the journey, I laugh, cried, and laugh again. . . incredible. :)

5 out of 5 stars If it keeps your wife up   August 28, 2008
I bought this book for my wife and I can't remember when (been married 41 years) I bought her a book that she couldn't put down. She didn't come to bed she read it almost non stop (she did put it down so she could fix my meals). Then she told me the story in such detail I did not have to read it. She loved it!

4 out of 5 stars Great but very sad   August 27, 2008
Outstanding book written very well, but so very sad. Enzo was the best. Makes you look at your own dog differently!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book must read   August 27, 2008
if you love dogs this is a must read. Very well written sad but funny, witty. Now I know what my dog thinks sometimes.

5 out of 5 stars A dog's Mind   August 26, 2008
I shy away from books or videos in which dogs or other animals can suddenly talk or act like humans. They are generally too "cutesy" and unrealistic. I don't remember what drew me to this book but I am thankful. Garth Stein has such an insight to a dog's mind that one must wonder if he, too began the life chain as a dog some life-times ago. I laughed and cried throughout the book and I have recommended it to many others. If you start reading, you won't put it down, you won't regret it, and you'll never look at your own dog the same way again.
