2 out of 5 stars Nice try but no cigar   December 29, 2008
Let me express my love for all things Marian Keyes.

I really think I understand the concept behind this novel, and I commend Marian for brouching these serious and pressing issues. I bet after reading this book we all thought about domestic violence, spousal abuse, alcholisim and/ dirty politics in one way or the other.

I agree with other readers, in saying the way that Lola was presented is downright annoying...it was cute at first, but just a huge annoyance as the novel progressed.

Marnie...was just a damn annoyance, she was the weakest character in the book, with Grace being the character that you'll likely feel more towards.

All in all the book was a little deep, a little annoying and lacked the abundance of humour that makes a Marian Keyes a Marian Keyes

5 out of 5 stars outstanding   December 24, 2008
This book is Marian Keyes at her best. I loved this book. My fav book of her's is Rachel's Holiday for its very realistic portrayal of someone recovering from addiction. This new book takes on another equally tough issue and makes the characters come to life.

1 out of 5 stars SO disappointing....   December 16, 2008
I was so excited when I found out Marian Keyes was coming out with a new book. I love all of her books, especially the ones about the Walsh sisters. I was even more excited when I found "This Charming Man" on a book exchange shelf at my hotel in London. "Yay!" I thought, "a good book for free!" I could not have been more wrong. The best thing I can say is that I'm glad I didn't pay for it. It was a copy published in Australia and it had this weird font that was completely distracting--though not nearly as distracting as the shorthand of Lola. How am I supposed to read that? It's like trying to read the first chapter of "The Sound and the Fury." You know, the chapter from the perspective of the mentally retarded kid. Well, I never finished Faulkner and I couldn't get past 30 pages of Lola. I was really looking forward to this book and it makes me sad that I had to put it down--and not ever want to pick it up again.

3 out of 5 stars I thought Keyes could do no wrong...   December 16, 2008
I thought that Marian Keyes could do no wrong, but I was sadly mistaken. While I like the plot of this charming man, I did not like how it was flushed out. Mainly, what was so "charming" about him? These women were his puppets and so in love with him ages down the line, but we never ever ever got to see anything charming at all which makes it more like, "Wtf did they see in him?" Can't have a book called this charming man about some idiot abuser and all the women he's left in his wake without showing what made them like him. We only got his bad bits so then I ended up not liking the women as much because I wondered how THEY could be such idiots. There was nothing to like about him and we were only TOLD how in love they were with him, how gaga they were, etc etc instead of being shown why they should still be loyal to him years down the line or why he'd cause a mental breakdown or anything.

I was just left with a bugger off attitude towards him, really wondering what his good points were that made anyone like him, let alone LOVE him, let alone be obsessed with him.

4 out of 5 stars Great as always but took a bit to hit its stride   November 23, 2008
I love Marian Keyes and always will, so I was pumped to see she had another book out. I was disappointed in her last book (Anybody Out There?) and looked forward to this one.

Per usual, it was funny and sharp with the right mix of serious subject matter and girly fun. But I felt like the first third was a bit off. I got irritated with the lack of pronouns in the Lola sections (it felt gimmicky, and gimmicky is beneath the fabulous Ms. Keyes.)

But when things started to gel, it was a real page-turner. I wish I could understand how all those women from all those different walks of life would fall for this loser with puffy hair, but hey, it's Marian Keyes - - I'll take her word for it.

Not my favorite, but by no means one to overlook.
